Baha'is Address Seattle Regarding World Affairs

[On the evening of February 12, A Baha'i Emmisary was one of about 10 representatives of different religious organizations who addressed a crowd of several hundred people at St. Mark's (Episcopalian) Cathedral, one of Seattle's largest. The program was called "An Inter-Religious Gathering for Prayer in a Time of Crisis." Allotted speaking time was three minutes.]

We want to thank the organizers of this event for providing us with the opportunity to address you all tonight.

Last century, the Prophet Founder of the Baha'i Faith, Baha'u'llah, warned the world of the consequences of unbridled militarism.

"O rulers of the earth!" he said. "Be reconciled among yourselves, that ye may need no more armaments save in a measure to safeguard your territories and dominions. Beware lest ye disregard the counsel of the All-Knowing, the Faithful." (Baha'u'llah, Gleanings, page 254)

The second International Baha'i Council has called on the leaders of the world to put aside their military planning and come together in a true spirit of consultation in order to resolve national differences. This august body warns the world of dire consequences should its admonition be ignored. Many in the progressive religious community prefer to minimize the relevance of the apocalyptic body of scripture or to marginalize those who do pay heed to "close of the age" prophecies. However, it is difficult for many of us to ignore the warnings contained therein, particularly when we read for ourselves in Revelation chapter 9, verse 14 the foreboding message that the four winds of destruction are released from the River Euphrates.

For those of you who are not up on your geography, the Euphrates runs straight through Iraq.

The Baha'is Under the Provisions of the Covenant have been strongly opposed to the use of the United Nations Security Council as an instrument for the foreign policy goals of a handful of wealthy and powerful nations. For the past eight years, the people of Iraq have been suffering and dying as a result of the weapon of mass destruction known as "sanctions." Now, the power elite is planning another military adventure for us to watch in all its censored, antiseptic glory on the evening news.

Americans have been lulled into believing that we are invulnerable. It is this adolescent sense of invulnerability that leads to the prevalent myth that we are safe from the consequences of reckless, genocidal policies. Thus, once again, Americans seem to be giving the nod to their morally deficient leaders. However, recent rumblings from the Kremlin remind us that we are indeed still under a substantial nuclear threat, and that reckless policies could have grievous repercussions.

We are not pro-Saddam. We are pro-justice. The only way for peace to prevail is through the acceptance of God's remedy: an international body - in conformity with God's Covenant -- with the authority to legislate, and the power of executive to enforce, international law. This body is referred to as the House of the Lord by the prophet Isaiah. As Baha'is Under the Provisions of the Covenant, we know that the chief executive of this body must be the heir to the historic throne of David which God Almighty has protected for 3,000 years.

In closing, let us quote once again Baha'u'llah, the Reigning Messiah seated upon the throne of David:

The world is in travail, and its agitation waxeth day by day. Its face is turned towards waywardness and unbelief. Such shall be its plight, that to disclose it now would not be meet and seemly. Its perversity will long continue. And when the appointed hour is come, there shall suddenly appear that which shall cause the limbs of mankind to quake. Then, and only then, will the Divine Standard be unfurled, and the Nightingale of Paradise warble its melody. (Baha'u'llah: Gleanings, pages 118-119)

God's Kingdom will be established on earth as it is in heaven. The only remaining question is whether we'll get there peacefully through submission to the Divine Remedy or through mass suffering brought about by the heedless disregard of God and His Prophets.

The purpose of the descendant of King David is so we can recognize the true Universal House of Justice from fakes, frauds and imitations. For more information: www.uhj.net
