Aqdas: The Holy of Holies

Dear All,

At this time we enter into the period of Ayyam-i-Ha which are the five Intercalary Days of Gift-Giving in the Badi or Baha'i Calendar. Then the last month of the year the month of the 19-day fast until the Vernal Equinox which is the new year or Naw Ruz. This calendar was revealed by the Bab and upheld by Baha'u'llah as 19 months of 19 days each (361 days 19 x 19 = 361) with four or five intercalary days depending upon leap years added by Baha'u'llah to keep the Baha'i sacred calendar in synchronicity with the solar Gregorian calendar, where normally march 21 would always correspond with Naw Ruz, that is Naw Ruz being fixed as the exact day of the Spring Equinox. As is the case now, the true vernal Equinox varies on the Gregorian calendar, but we still celebrate Naw Ruz at the exact time of the Equinox and set the period of the fast 19 days previously. For us therefore the first day of fast this year is Sunday March 2, with the Naw Ruz 19 days later. On other years the fast - in following this method - has started on March 1st.

"Aqdas" literally means "Holy of Holies" as this is the Book in which the Covenant of Baha'u'llah is revealed as expounded upon as the Kitab-i-Ahd; even as Moses had the Ark of the Covenant placed within the Holy of Holies which was a box in a room, so Baha'u'llah had his Book of the Covenant (Kitab-i-Ahd) placed within the Book of the Aqdas or the Holy of Holies. This – Kitab-i-Aqdas – has be translated as “Most Holy Book”, but more preparedly is the “Book of the Holy of Holies”.

Now Shoghi Effendi tells us that the Covenant-breakers and those of the “Hands-Faith” in Haifa” do not posses the actual Aqdas of Baha'u'llah which is the Divine Holy Book of Laws, Ordinance and teachings in their proper fullness and form.

From Shoghi Effendi:

“The Persians do not have the complete "Aqdas", nor even a complete compilation, as it is not yet a "book". The laws are encountered in many Tablets written by Baha'u'llah. For example, in a Tablet written to a certain person, He would suddenly announce a new Law. Some day, all of these will be compiled into a single book. "The Aqdas" will have to translated by experts. The present Guardian will not do it. When the Baha'i State is formed, "The Aqdas" will be promulgated. The Laws are few but very strict….

“There are twenty-six volumes of the Tablets directed to persons, which contain parts of the "Aqdas". These will later be included in the “Aqdas”.

“I have indicated some of these laws for present observance. I shall see how the people obey them and give them out gradually. Little by little the Guardian will indicate those Laws which are obligatory, binding, and those which are recommended.” (Shoghi Effendi, To a Believer, Jan. 15 - Feb 11, 1956)

These “Persians” became the lead violators of the mainstream Covenant-breaking movement against the Davidic Kingship that rejected ‘Abdu'l-Baha's Aghsan son as the first President of the UHJ (and successive Guardian to Shoghi Effendi) set up in 1951. Now the Aqdas was never completed and compiled during the ministries of either ‘Abdu'l-Baha or Shoghi Effendi nor was it done during the ministries of the first presidents of the UHJ but was transmitted in its fullness to the current Guardian today and his fellow members of the UHJ. Attached to this document is chapter four of the fourth section regarding the laws of the Calendar (Sabbath) that pertain to the Fast and Ayyam-i-Ha along with the revealed prayers of the fast that the friends may wish to recite in commemoration at this time.

The rest of the Aqdas in its entirety we have here in our possession at the World Center and have not as of yet published it in its fullness. Forthcoming will be a true synopsis and codification of the Aqdas that outlines and reveals its full scope and Most Perfect Form.

Briefly, the true Aqdas when completed is fashioned after the Most Perfect Form. It is according to the four worlds correlated with the four letters of the most great name and as 1+2+3+4 = 10 it has basic ten parts. It is impossible to get into now at his time due to the enormity of other work and the great financial strain upon us at this time as well as the lack of proper office facilities to engage in that work at this time.

Suffice it to say, that Baha'u'llah revealed the Aqdas in such a way that the Covenant-breakers should never posses it or understand it! Like Moses that smashed the two tablets, what Baha'u'llah gives us are manuscripts fragments and shards that need to be codified into the Most Perfect Form. This is the mission of the Four Letters of the Most Great Name where the first two are twin manifestations and the second two are twin institutions appearing first as zugot in Joshua and Zerubbabel. Thus the fourth letter – hamza – being the throne or Temple, completes the cycles and is able to codify the book that shall be fleshed out by the fully elected UHJ at the appointed time.

It is our hope the attached document will aid and assist all the friends in their spiritual advancement toward the throne on High in their work and worship in teaching effort and devotion and love of the One True Invisible God, the Creator of the Universe and everything in it.

On behalf of the Council,

Neal Chase ben Joseph Aghsan,
Guardian/President.
